Sixth Street Baptist Church Receives Vehicle Donation

We are happy to continue, due to overwhelming community response, with our 2020/2021 campaign – “CauseWheels” Monthly Vehicle Donation Program – to help our neighbors and positively impact Ocean County. In 2019 Causeway had two requests for vehicle donations to local non-profit organizations. We were able to accommodate each of these requests. This prompted an idea to follow up 2019’s 50th Anniversary $10,000 Monthly Grant program.

We are proud to announce our June winner, Sixth Street Baptist Church.

Sixth Street Baptist Church is located in the heart of Lakewood, New Jersey. There, they have the “Garden of Praise” food pantry which started in January of 2016 by church member Charlene Jordan with the help of Min. Carl Smith. Charlene had a dream to feed the members of her community. This was something that her mother had done and she wanted to follow in her footsteps. Charlene went to her Pastor and asked him what her budget would be to make her dream come true. At this time the Pastor Robert Morris told her don’t go by budget, just feed the people!

With humble beginnings the Garden of Praise pantry started with a clientele of two people. As the numbers continued to grow the Church continued to fund the pantry 100%. Approximately one year later while volunteering for Fulfill, Charlene learned about the various programs offered through Fulfill. Once teamed up with Fulfill (Previously known as the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties) that number changed. Now, they are feeding around 150 people per month. Some of which are homeless. Out of the 150 approximately 60/70 are families. Once COVID hit, they started to deliver to seniors and the disabled. They connected with the local housing authority to make this happen.

Now with life returning to somewhat normalcy, clients check in and pick up a pre-packed box of food. Then clients get to choose from an assortment of what else they may need. This includes produce, meats and cereals. Almost all food now comes from Fulfill.

The van that Causeway donated to Sixth Street Baptist Church will be utilized to deliver meals to seniors and the disabled!

The SSBC “Garden of Praise” food pantry is now open every 2nd and 4th Saturday, from 10:00 am – 2:00pm.
