Project Home Repair: Enhancing Lives Through Critical Home Repairs

Project Home Repair is a collective effort that brings together several not-for-profit organizations and community-based groups to address the increasing need for critical home repairs among the senior, veteran, and vulnerable populations in Ocean County.

MANAHAWKIN, NJ – Since its inception in July 2023, Project Home Repair has made significant strides in improving the quality of life for vulnerable populations in Ocean County. A collective initiative driven by Causeway CARes, Project Home Repair brings together local organizations including: Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity, Homes for All, Southern Ocean Habitat for Humanity, and Starve Poverty International to address the increasing demand for critical home repairs among seniors, veterans, and those facing physical challenges.

The coalition, founded by Dave C. Wintrode, President of the Causeway Family of Dealerships and Causeway CARes, was formed to bridge the gap in services and resources needed to repair homes that provide safety and dignity to individuals living in difficult conditions. To date, the coalition has completed repairs throughout Ocean County including roof repairs, the construction of ramps for accessibility, and the installation of grab bars for safety. The total commitment since its formation has surpassed an impressive $1.3 million.

Funding for these projects have come from generous donors including local foundations such as the Causeway CARes/Wintrode Family Foundation, the Citta Foundation, the OceanFirst Foundation as well as individual employees of Causeway Family of Dealerships.

One of the many success stories highlights Donna, whose roof had begun to deteriorate after the passing of her husband. Despite her efforts to keep it patched with tarps, the damage worsened, leading to a collapsed ceiling and water flooding her home. Recently diagnosed with MS, Donna’s situation was dire. Thanks to the efforts of Homes for All, her roof was repaired, ensuring her ability to remain in her home.

Similarly, Rachel, a disabled teacher’s aide in Forked River, was overwhelmed by a roof leak that had persisted for three years. After reaching out to Homes for All, Rachel’s roof received the repairs necessary for her to live safely, free from the constant worry of water damage.

In Whiting, a resident’s aging roof and unsafe home conditions were repaired through Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity. In addition to the roof replacement, the team rebuilt her front steps, repaired bathroom flooring, and completed a tub-to-shower conversion. This month Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity will honor Causeway CARes/the Wintrode Family Foundation for their commitment and support of Project Home Repair. Meanwhile, in Waretown, Project Home Repair and Starve Poverty International provided a metal access ramp for a 94-year-old woman who was reliant on a wheelchair. This not only allowed her to exit her home more easily but also provided a much-needed solution for her husband, who uses a walker.

These stories are just a few examples of the work being done to transform homes and, by extension, lives.

As the organization continues its mission to improve the health and safety of homes in Ocean County, Project Home Repair has been selected as one of two beneficiaries of the 2024 Causeway 5K. The event aims to raise additional funds to support the vital work of the coalition, ensuring that more homes can receive the necessary repairs and improvements.

According to Wintrode, the coalition’s mission is just getting started. “The success of the first year is just the beginning. We are committed to ensuring that no individual has to live in unsafe or uninhabitable conditions.”

With its commitment to uplifting and safeguarding vulnerable populations, Project Home Repair is poised to continue its transformative impact on the community in Ocean County.
